Late in the century, court dress was over-decorated and worn with extremely wide paniers, so that it became very heavy. The long train was decorated with the strangest things - artificial flowers, fruit, artificial birds, jewels - and so heavy that it was almost impossible to move wearing it. Therefore, the bas de robe was invented: A train separate from the gown which could be put on in the antechamber and discarded immediately after having left court.
