The Lace Maker
Caspar Netscher, 1662

The Wallace Collection, London

head shoulder shoe

The bare wooden floor and the cracked wall suggest that this unknown girl is not making lace merely to while away the time: She has to make her living. However, the beautifully embroidered bonnet, the gold braid on her colourful bodice and the fact that she owns shoes show that she is not without means. She may be a member medium well-off family, or a maid who received her mistress' discarded garments.

Caspar Netscher:
* 1635/36 Heidelberg
+ 15/1/1684 's-Gravenhage
student of Terborch, court painter in 's-Gravenhage (Den Haag)
